Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Steve Shewmaker is a native of the Southeast, growing up in Texas and Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama on cross country and Army ROTC scholarships and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1990 as a Distinguished Military Graduate. Steve has been practicing military and criminal law since 2006.  Over those 14 years Steve has represented clients in both state and military courts in hundreds of criminal matters including sex assault, domestic assault, BAH fraud, AWOL, FTR, assault, aggravated assault, abusive sexual contact, firearm offenses, false official statement, larceny, adultery, a variety of order violations, insubordination, fraternization, child pornography, and conduct unbecoming.

In 1990, Steve was commissioned as an Army Officer. Steve served as an Infantry Officer in the 25th Infantry Division and later served in Military Intelligence assignments at Fort Hood, Texas and in the Middle East. After serving for ten years on active duty, Steve left active duty and served in the Georgia Army National Guard. Steve deployed in 2003 – 2004 as a Battalion Operations Officer and later as Brigade Executive Officer attached to the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Steve received the Bronze Star Medal for his service in a combat theater of operations. Steve later served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Alabama National Guard as a Judge Advocate, including two deployments in 2010 and 2017.

Steve Shewmaker, along with his wife, Patricia (“Patty”) Shewmaker, is a founding partner of Shewmaker & Shewmaker, LLC, an Atlanta based law firm specializing in military law and criminal defense. Their practice focuses on service members, dependents and retirees.

In 2011, as a member of the Georgia Bar Association’s Family Law section and Military and Veterans’ Law section, Steve advocated before the Georgia State Legislature for the passage of the Georgia Military Parents Equal Rights Act. Steve volunteers on a regular basis at the veterans legal clinic at the Veterans Administration in downtown Atlanta where he provides free legal consults for veterans. Steve and his wife Patty have also worked with the State Bar of Georgia and Georgia State University College of Law to establish a veterans’ legal clinic at the Georgia State University College of Law. This legal clinic provides legal assistance to veterans enrolled at Georgia State University and also pairs practicing attorneys with Georgia State law students to mentor law students and help them gain valuable client experience while still in law school. Steve and Patty are also adjunct professors at the Georgia State University College of Law where they teach Military Law.

Steve has spoken at American Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association and other legal seminars on various aspects of military law. Along with his wife, Patty, he has spoken in Alaska, California, Nevada, Maryland, Alabama and other locations. Steve and Patty are also the co-authors of Military Family Law, published by LexisNexis (2019, 3rd edition).

Steve is a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. Steve is also a member of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia, and he is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Military and Veterans Law Section and the Military Legal Assistance Program of the State Bar of Georgia. Steve is also a member of the American Bar Association, the DeKalb County Bar Association, and a member of the Class of 2013 Leadership DeKalb. Steve is sworn to practice before all courts in Georgia, the U.S. District Courts in the Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia and is also certified under Article 27(b) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice to practice before the courts martial of the United States.
